Supporting Communities: A New Playpark for Lairg
At North Highland Initiative (NHI), we’re passionate about supporting communities across the North Highlands through our Community Infrastructure Support Programme (CISP). We recently had the privilege of supporting Lairg and District Community Initiatives (LDCI) in their efforts to create a much-needed playpark at the Ferrycroft Visitor Centre in Lairg. This project is a prime example of how local funding can make a lasting impact, providing a safe, inclusive space for children and families to enjoy.
A Playpark for Everyone
Since the 1990s, the playpark at the Ferrycroft Visitor Centre had been a popular spot for children in Lairg. However, over the years, the equipment became outdated and had to be removed. Two other playparks in the area also faced similar issues, with rusty, unsafe equipment that no longer served the community’s needs.
Recognising this gap, LDCI partnered with the Highland Council Amenities Department, Lairg Community Council, and a group of local parents to address the lack of play facilities. The community’s support for a new playpark was clear, and through a local consultation, the plan for a new, all-abilities playpark was set in motion. Much of the new all-abilities equipment was chosen by the local children themselves, ensuring the park met the needs and desires of the very people it was intended for.
How CISP Funding Helped
NHI’s CISP funding played a key role in supporting this initiative. The funding specifically contributed to the installation of five recycled plastic benches and a wheelchair-accessible picnic table. These additions were designed to make the playpark more inclusive, ensuring it was accessible and welcoming for people of all abilities.
After the park passed its independent inspection, it was officially opened in October 2024, bringing a new recreational space to the heart of Lairg.
A Positive Impact on the Community
The new playpark has already had a noticeable impact on the local community. Feedback from the children has been overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing their gratitude for having such a fun and safe space to play. Local staff at the Ferrycroft Visitor Centre have also noticed an increase in footfall, particularly during the school holidays, and they are excited to promote the park in future marketing efforts.
This project not only benefits local children but has also helped boost the local economy by attracting visitors to the area. Families are now more likely to visit the Ferrycroft Visitor Centre and the village of Lairg, contributing to the local shops and restaurants.

The successful completion of this project shows just how impactful community-driven initiatives can be. LDCI has demonstrated that by listening to the needs of the community and working collaboratively, they can create high-quality spaces that benefit everyone. The flexibility of the CISP funding process made it easy for LDCI to access the support they needed, and we were delighted to help make their vision a reality.
