About US
North Highland Initiative (NHI) works across Caithness, Sutherland, Ross & Cromarty, and the islands of Orkney, Shetland, Lewis and Harris to deliver programmes and grant funding that help grow and champion the potential of our natural resources and talent, encourage economic stability and build diverse resilient communities.
NHI actively supports communities through fundraising and grant making and collaborates with community groups to identify projects that support community infrastructure, services and well-being. In the last five years NHI has donated over £500,000 since 2020 to community-led projects and programmes.
North Highland Products Ltd (NHP), the trading arm of the NHI charity, which includes the renowned Mey Selections brand, works with local farmers and suppliers, offering high-quality, locally sourced, and sustainable produce. This partnership has generated over £1.7 million in additional income for local farmers and opened market opportunities for producers in the Highlands. Funds from the sales also directly support local community and environmental projects as well as championing our farms and farmers’ future and supports rural skills education programmes.

NHI’s belief in long term sustainable communities meant we were one of the first partners for The North Coast 500 (NC500), now hailed as the world’s top touring route. This 516-mile route has gained global recognition, attracting people worldwide, creating hundreds of jobs. By 2019 it had contributed £9 million to the North Highland economy. NHI has also invested in smaller scale locally led tourism projects including the John O Groats Trail, John O Groats Mill, Scourie Geo Park, Wild North festival, and the Russian Arctic Convoy Museum.
Most recently NHI has become one of the partners in The Flow Country Partnership, a locally led initiative to raise money to restore peatlands at scale and establish a new model for peatland restoration.
The project blends public and private finance in order to facilitate a just transition, reducing emissions, sequestering carbon and benefiting biodiversity, communities and the local economy.
