NHI Funding Supports Vital Maintenance at The North Baths
At the North Highland Initiative, we are proud to support local communities in preserving and enhancing their much-loved spaces through our Community Infrastructure Support Programme (CISP). One recent success story is Friends of the North Baths, a volunteer-led group dedicated to maintaining and restoring the North Baths – Wick’s historic outdoor swimming pool.
Who Are Friends of the North Baths?
Friends of the North Baths was reformed in 2020 by local residents who care deeply about this unique piece of Wick’s history. Located at North Head, Wick, the pool originally served as Blackwater Harbour in the early 19th century. In 1904, the harbour was transformed into a public bathing pool – and it remains in use today, offering a truly special outdoor swimming experience on the Caithness coast.
The group works tirelessly to keep the baths clean, safe, and welcoming by undertaking regular maintenance such as power washing the pool, cutting surrounding grass, and maintaining the adjacent picnic area. They also fundraise locally to cover ongoing repairs and upkeep.
How NHI Funding Made a Difference
Through the CISP fund, NHI was able to support the group with vital funding to carry out essential floor maintenanceof the pool. This included the hiring of local contractor JLS Formwork to dredge the pool floor and remove storm debris – a task crucial for ensuring proper drainage and enabling the pool to be cleaned and used safely.
Without this maintenance, the pool’s drainage valves could become blocked, preventing regular cleaning and risking long-term damage. By using a local contractor, the Friends of the North Baths were also able to keep costs low and support the local economy.
A Lasting Impact on the Local Community
The impact of the project has been significant. Thanks to the funding, the pool can now be cleaned and maintained more easily, keeping it safe for year-round use by both residents and visitors. During the summer months, families, swimmers, and community groups gather at the baths to swim, paddle, and picnic – benefiting from the improved condition of the site.
